Inside Pino’s Cronulla with Owner, Matteo Margiotta, and Interior Designer, Nic Graham
We’re excited to showcase our latest project featuring Pino's Vino e Cucina al Mare, a stunning new dining destination that has recently opened its doors in Cronulla. Created by restaurateur Matteo Margiotta, who also owns sister restaurant Pino’s Vino e Cucina in Alexandria, Pino’s Cronulla is inspired by the natural beauty of Puglia, a place where Matteo enjoyed an unforgettable family holiday with his wife and daughters.
The restaurant has taken over a historic building that was once a Methodist church, and then went on to be converted into a library and restaurant 1908, a well-known building among locals in the area. The restaurant interior featuring white rustic walls, terracotta ornaments and olive trees, plus the coastal menu created by Executive Chef Cristiano Patacca, reflect the sun-kissed shores and energy of the Italian coast. To top it off, it is only a few minutes' walk to Cronulla beach.
Lighting is more than just a practical necessity; it’s a critical element in setting the mood and defining the character of a space. Matteo worked with acclaimed Interior Designer Nic Graham on this project, and we spoke to both on the design journey and how lighting played its part.
What was your vision for the restaurant’s ambiance?
Matteo: “Our vision for Pino’s Cronulla was inspired by the natural beauty and charm of Puglia. We aimed to create a space that felt like a coastal retreat, where the earthy tones, soft lighting, and Mediterranean elements come together to evoke the feeling of dining by the sea. The goal was to reflect the relaxed elegance of Puglia while providing a modern twist that complements the vibrant Italian flavours we serve.”
Nic: “It’s so rare to work with spaces these days with such a beautiful high volume, the old library is a space that harnesses the Italian seaside vibe and modern dining establishment so well as set out by the owner, a beautiful sister venue to the original Pino’s in Alexandria.”
How did you choose the lighting style for the space?
Matteo: “We chose lighting that would accentuate the natural elements of the restaurant’s design. The soft, warm tones complement the earthy colours and textures of the decor, while the statement pieces add a touch of sophistication. It was essential for us to strike a balance between functional lighting and creating an inviting, intimate ambiance.”
Nic: “Terracotta wall lights, lamps and pendants were sourced for a Puglia vibe … It was a key factor to warm the interior up and create a more ambient and moodier feel at night for the restaurant. Light fittings were selected for their aesthetic appearance in line with the palette already created with terracotta, olive green, white and timber.
In the street front dining space, a family of contemporary white cones fills the void, and has great visual street appeal. We added thick timber shelves here, with mirror backs above the windows to highlight a beautiful collection of bespoke ceramics – evoking an Italian feel.”
Nic: “Having such a wonderful high ceiling is a blessing, but also needs to balance with lighting at a human level. Terracotta table lamps were added to the bar, and ceramic uplighters to the walls to balance the uplit ceiling. We adjusted the dimming to the house lights to achieve a warm glow and allow the additional low-level lighting to create the mood.”
What role do you think lighting plays in the overall dining experience?
Matteo: “Lighting is critical to the overall dining experience, as it sets the mood from the moment guests walk in. It can make the difference between a casual meal and an unforgettable experience. The right lighting enhances the presentation of the food, brings out the beauty of the space, and helps create an inviting atmosphere where guests want to linger and enjoy.”
How have your customers responded to the new lighting?
Matteo: “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Our customers have mentioned how much they love the cosy and intimate feel the lighting creates, and many have commented on how it enhances the overall aesthetic of the restaurant. It’s helped us build a unique dining environment that our guests really appreciate.”
Nic: “The end result is really appealing; we achieved a warm and balanced dining experience that satisfied the clients brief for a modern Italian coastal environment.”
We are proud to be part of this exciting project and look forward to seeing how Pino’s Cronulla becomes a beloved spot in the community. If you’re inspired to transform your own space with exquisite lighting, explore our curated collections of designer lights, or get in touch.
